A Message From Your Cerebellum

FEED ME!!!

Your cerebellum is located at the base of the brain against the occiput.  It is a very important conductor in daily activities that you do mindlessly – picking up your coffee cup, transitioning into your car, shooting a basketball, marching, painting, typing….the list goes on.  Have you ever considered the accuracy that it takes to lift your foot just high enough to clear the curb or maybe thread your shoelace through the eyelet of your shoe?  All these activities are coordinated at the cerebellum.

human-brain-functions

If you have experienced an episode of vertigo, loss of balance, repeated falls, or you bump into things routinely then you have experienced the effect of your cerebellum having a bad day….or days.  There can be many causes of cerebellum dysfunction – dehydration, subluxation, injury, posture, or one in particular that I would like to discuss today – lack of input!

Your brain was made perfect.  It is really unbelievable to think of the Master’s design from a scientific perspective – the lobes, left vs right hemispheres, neurotransmitters, synapses, hormones, peripheral vs central….it will literally make your brain fire!  With so many factors and functions, it is essential for survival that your brain prioritize functions that you need.  You’ve heard the adage; you don’t use it you lose it?  Well, that applies to your brain as well.  Every movement, thought, calculation, emotion, stimulus, decision (bites of information that you feed your brain) moves you into a more efficient version of you!

Unfortunately, the Master’s design can fail you if you let it.  For every bite that you feed your brain, it is strengthening one path at the detriment of the alternative path.  Sometimes I think of it as a pasture of corn.  If you had 6 friends that lived around the perimeter of your pasture, you would wear 6 paths evenly if you visited them each once a week.  But let’s say that you grew closer to one of those friends and over time, you just walked the path to one house.  The other 5 paths would soon be unrecognizable, grown up and impossible to navigate.  This is what happens to the paths to your cerebellum when you stop moving!

The excellent news is you can start today giving your cerebellum food that helps keep your functions as reliable as GPS!  Just a few things to consider adding into your daily, weekly or monthly routine of activity – maybe a rotation of all things 😊

  • Barrel rolls on the floor
  • Karaoke – calisthenics
  • Step up and down a curb without support if safe
  • Figure 8s with your arms and legs – make sure to do both sides
  • Squat – use the wall or a ball if you are working on building the strength
  • Bicycle your arms and legs on your back
  • Spin in a circle – make sure to go both ways and use support if needed
  • Supermans, Planks, and Bird-Dogs
  • Side crunches – you can crunch just your upper body or lay on the floor and incorporate your leg – again, make sure to do both sides
  • Play catch
  • Take deep breaths in various head positions – preferably while seated or laying down

Looking forward to hearing your stories of improved balance and coordination after giving your cerebellum some FOOD!!!

Dr. Taryn

Meet Dr. Taryn Lowery

Excited to share my interview with Voyage Dallas Magazine 🙂  It is a philosophically driven team of writers and editors that seek out “The Most Inspiring Stories in Dallas.”

You can check out the full article, but here are a couple of excerpts:

Taryn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my journey in chiropractic as a patient in 2004. I was inspired by the God-given potential for my body to heal, and how different optimal was from normal. In 2007, I started chiropractic college at Parker in Dallas. In the three most intense years of my life I found my purpose in life. I also found my partner in life 🙂

…..So, August 6th 2012, we opened Peace of Life Chiropractic in Midlothian, TX!! We have grown so much in the last five years!! We have gone from one employee to seven. We have gone from 0 patients to over 800. We recently opened an additional 650 sq. ft., adding massage therapy, cold laser, and the coolest part…. Joey and I are working together again!!!

…..Our current vision, and probably our ultimate destination is to relocate in three years to our uniquely designed WHOLISTIC HEALTH CENTER. We aspire to offer a wide variety of professional services such as chiropractic, massage, hydrocolonics, color therapy, infrared light, cold laser, ionic foot baths, counseling, life coaching, nutritional coaching, fertility support, pregnancy care, postpartum services, etc. We will also have accommodations for overnight needs, and hopefully birthing! Our grounds will include a community garden, prayer and meditation center, walking trails, and more. We plan to incorporate holistic care for the whole body and the whole family.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not ever! Lol!! Not in a bad way. Just like Henry Kissinger said, “A diamond is a chunk of coal that did well under pressure.” I wouldn’t expect there to never be an obstacle or challenge. They always have a lesson to learn, and make us better at the next challenge. I think the rough road has helped me professionally understand the effects of stress on the body, and made me even more passionate about helping our patients be aware, and then guiding them to resilience!

Peace of Life Chiropractic – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are set apart from others by our how and why.

Our how is probably our most unique quality. We are the most un-officey office. We have a serene peaceful space that makes our patients feel at home, especially the kids!

We also have an approach to patient care unlike any other chiropractic practice. We offer attentive, focused care for most all health needs – from ADD to hair loss to headaches, we use adjustments and complimentary tools to help patients unleash their inner healer!!

Our why is what we are most proud of. Why we care for patients 6 days a week, come in early and stay late = we love helping people!! Dr. Parker said “Loving service is my first technique.” We practice this daily. This mindful intention is evident in evert treatment, and can almost be palpated!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me has two parts. One is internal harmony. The other is the effect my harmony has on others – I strive to always make my heart shine – helping them let theirs shine.

I will treasure this opportunity to share our story!  I hope  it inspires another entrepreneur, healer, dreamer, goal-setter!  I will keep telling our story 🙂  May God continue to be our portion, and provide the grace and provision that allow us to keep serving with love and compassion!

Thank you for being a part of our journey!!!  Your love and support is an asset that we treasure!!

In Love and Service,

Taryn Lowery, DC

hOw We MeT HaLcYoN vIlLaGe <3

So today marked the beginning of the next season for Peace of Life Chiropractic!  Looking back at the journey – we have had so much fun, served many lives, inspired change in our community, created a culture of love & connection.  Looking ahead……WOW!!  The vision we have for our patients and our community is coming ALIVE!

Part of me is exhausted….physically and mentally.  Our village has worked 12+ hour days over the last five.  We started early and stayed late.  We faced opposition while we crawled through the trenches.  We fussed at each other.  I had a melt down….LOL….one single, but very large, melt down.  Plenty of moments where bystanders made the statement of, “when are you opening…oh, wow, good luck with that.”  They weren’t trying to be mean or pessimistic, there was just literally an unimaginable amount of work to be done!

The other part of me feels exhilarated!!!!  I really feel like God has given each of us tools, and then combined us for this amazing mission –

Connection – Help our community feel like they are supported and loved.  Give them a place to come together in heart, philosophy, parenting, healing, grieving, thriving!

Movement – Facilitate a well-skilled, passionate, and compassionate group of professionals to help our community move!  Keep them moving 🙂

Healing – Give our community access to professionals and tools to help them restore harmony in their body.  Relieve the effects of stress and trauma.  Invite the mindset of endless possibilities!

Balance – Bring awareness to the need for emotional balance.  Encourage our community to seek care for the needs of their mind, as it relates to stress response and the body.

As we find our hearts filling with purpose, fulfillment, and joy, we continue to refine how we combine what we do with how we do it.  That sounds so simple, maybe cliche, but the how is really what has set us apart.  I think the how is what will propel our community into well-being and vitality!

Drum Roll……Here’s How We Met HALCYON VILLAGE

About 3 summers ago I went on a girl’s get-away with some friends from high school in Hideaway, TX.  After a fun night of wine, dinner, and games, I woke up the next day feeling rested, relaxed and nostalgic.  I sat out on a quiet porch and watched the morning roll by.  I began to jot down some thoughts.  One thing led to the next, I had the vision for a community of people with hope and love, working together to create a place where healing and joy could be cultivated.  I journaled, googled, and brainstormed until the vision had a name.  Halcyon Village was born.

halcyonHalcyon is a type of bird.  It is referenced in Greek mythology.  They represent love, commitment, peace, and calm.

Village to us means the people, not necessarily the places.  “It takes a village” is a proverb of unknown origin.  It’s truth transcends all cultures.
We have incorporated an olive branch in the logo as well.  The branch is classically known to represent peace.  The tree has even more significance.  The tree is hollow – ministers teach that, like an olive tree, you must fill yourself with the Holy Spirit.  It is resilient – if the trunk is cut, its roots will continue to grow.  Its heartiness and strength are qualities that justify its symbolism for righteousness.
As you can tell, these are not just words to put on a sign or business card.  These are words that represent who we are.

TMA vs. TBCE and TBCE Rule 78.13

The TEXAS chiropractic profession needs your help!!!  The TMA (Texas Medical Association) has filed a lawsuit against TBCE (Texas Board of Chiropractic Examiners).  TMA wants chiropractors to lose their ability to diagnose patients.  This translates –> you will have to have a referral from a medical doctor to see a chiropractor IF you want to file your insurance benefits.  From what we can tell, this will NOT affect patients that choose to pay out of pocket.

We don’t want to create undo alarm, but this is serious for a few reasons:

  1. Principle – there is no justification.  Chiropractors are thoroughly trained to diagnose and treat the neuromusculoskeletal  system.  If you are a patient of chiropractic care, you have experienced just that.  We have to be able to diagnose in order to know where to adjust, when to adjust, and of course when not to adjust.
  2. Some chiropractors are employed by practices that are 80-100% paid by third party payers.  This would dramatically affect the amount of paperwork that would be required.  This could potentially decrease the volume of patients that have access to treatment.  This would undoubtedly increase the amount of time a patient would have to wait for treatment.
  3. Currently, medical doctors often don’t refer to chiropractors simply out of ignorance of what chiropractors do.  It would be a disservice to the patient as well as healthcare if the majority of patient are filtered through the medical wheel before they even have a chance of seeking chiropractic care.
  4. For the LOVE!!!!  Chiropractors are awesome!!  They should be able to do what they love to do EVERYDAY without the intervention of a medical professional that may or may not know what the benefits of chiropractic care are.  Maybe they had a bad experience with a chiropractOR and they don’t support the profession.  Maybe they don’t “believe” in chiropractic.  BELIEVE it or not, I’ve heard so many times that patients either don’t tell their MD that they see a chiropractor because they assume their disapproval, or tell them they do, only to be reprimanded for their choice 😦

Unfortunately, this is really happening. The Texas Chiropractic Association (http://www.chirotexas.org/) is fighting for us, & has appealed the initial ruling. Here is the latest update: http://www.chirotexas.org/index.php…

If you want to help keep chiropractic a direct entry service, and not be required to get a referral to receive care by a chiropractor, you can donate to TCA’s CDI (http://www.chirotexas.org/cdi) & send correspondence to our STATE senators and representatives. If you live in Ellis County, here is the contact information:
http://www.fyi.legis.state.tx.us/County.aspx

To make life simple, I’ve created the documents for our District.  If you want the word document so you can edit the legislator’s address, just email us at peaceoflifechiropractic@live.com.To send a letter to Texas State Senator Brian Birdwell click hereTo send a letter to Texas State Representative John Wray click here.

Thank you so much for getting involved!!  No matter the outcome, chiropractic care will remain awesome.  The power that made the body will continue to heal the body.   Nevertheless, we appreciate you helping us be heard & hopefully protect the scope of practice for chiropractors!!!!

Faith VS Certainty

Dr. Brene Brown says, “Faith is a place of mystery, where we find the courage to believe in what we cannot see and the strength to let go of uncertainty.”

I have been investing time in thought around the difference between faith and certainty, or the lack of.  I have years of practice (religion, environment, experience, etc) that encourages me to embrace faith in my spiritual life.  There seems to be a growing intuitive compulsion to practice faith in the realm of health, especially natural healing.  It has been a journey to say the least.  I am hopeful that this journey continues.  I have seen the practice of faith lend miracles.  It is a power that I honor and revere, but it is far from understood.  I think that is the beauty of it….we are not meant to understand, just believe….be courageous!

A patient delivered her gratitude for this phenomenon in the form of a hand-made card.  She writes:

Dr. Taryn

It’s the day before Thanksgiving and I want to express to you how thankful I am that God placed me in your care to guide me on my journey to healing.  In May 2012 I found myself going down an unfamiliar path of dealing with several physical issues, and for some reason the majority of my pain manifested itself in my lower back and hip.  Something inside of me told me that all the issues I was dealing with had one root cause, and yet I couldn’t get anyone else to believe me.  I spent 7 months trying to deal with the issues myself.  I visited a couple of medical doctors that wanted to medicate the issues without getting to the root of all the problems, and that only added to my frustration.  I got to the point where I couldn’t stand the pain any loner and in January I found myself sitting in your waiting room.  After consulting with you I felt as though I finally found someone with a listening ear and the ability to address ALL that was going on with me.  I felt such a sense of peace when I left your office that day!  At that time I would have never dreamed all the things that I would learn on the other side of this journey….

First, I have learned to trust the God given instincts that He has given to me with the things concerning my body.  Secondly, I have learned to trust the peace that God gives to me when He leads me in a certain direction and to stay on that course and finish it.  I am so thankful God kept leading my path to you…..it was the only place my heart found peace and my body began to heal.  Thirdly, I have learned that my body is an amazing miracle that is complex and intertwined!  I have learned that if I treat the whole body….including the mind, spirit and emotion….then healing can begin.  I would have never guessed that all I was experiencing had so much to do with my chemical makeup and with what I was feeding it both physically and mentally.

My journey has had its ups and downs, but I finally feel like I am reaching the end.  I feel as though I have found peace in my heart.  In my mind, and in my body!  You have shared with me a vast amount of knowledge and have been my support and cheerleader throughout this journey….not to mention the many times your healing hands have brought relief to my hurting body 🙂  My words fall so short of what my heart feels and to simply say “thank you” seems very inadequate….but my words are all I have.  God has used you in my life to help me find my way to healing and I will forever be grateful!

My heart overflows with gratitude – Teresa Diener

I don’t know that I could say it any better than that.  When you listen to your “guts” and act in faith, truely amazing things can happen!

Sometimes we are blessed with confirmation through bloodwork or imaging  of a diagnosis (aka certainty).  From that diagnosis there is often a recommendation for treatment that can either prevent progression of the condition or resolve it.  BUT….more often than not, we are not given certainty.  It is very common to consult a healthcare professional with a symptom, maybe multiple symptoms, and a treatment is recommended as a trial.  Notice I used the word trial.  The practice of medicine usually starts with a differential of diagnosis.  One symptom could be a product of countless conditions.  A healthcare professional has to gather data from the patient and combine it with knowledge of disease/health that they have to conclude the list of possible conditions.  Again, we are occassionally blessed by a lab test or imaging that can confirm a single condition.  More often, treatment is recommended based on the more common or more likely condition, hence a trial of treatment, reducing and/or resolving the condition.

With a different pair of glasses on you can consider the power of adding good 🙂  Let’s say you are admitted to the hospital for 3 days for a cardiac procedure.  Of course the heart is an important organ.  The procedure is necessary to keep you alive.  Let’s also say you were denied food and water for those 3 days.  How would a lack of nutrition and hydration affect your ability to endure the procedure?  Recover?  Thrive?  I think everyone would agree, you would have to add food and water during your stay at the hospital to endure, recover and thrive.  The importance of nutrition and hydration, among many other “good” additions to our body, can be a game-changer when it comes to healing.  We all know what we should do to stay healthy; what if the right combination of  consistent “good” could be the key to our prosperity, even when there is disease present?

We need a myriad of “good” in our lives to thrive.  Everyone priortizes them a little different, but to name a few: food, water, relaxation, purpose, supplementation, sleep, exercise, oxygen, adjustments, detoxification, connection to others and positivity.  How often do we priortize the needs of others: work, school, friends, status, church, etc?  The  constant demand to serve immediate needs (of ourselves or others) at the expense of our long-term needs can rob us of our health!

It is often easy to convince yourself that a prescription medication that has been researched and approved by the FDA will help hault progression or resolve your condition.  What gives you that certainty?  Can you think of areas of “good” that you have neglected in your health?  Could you convince yourself, in the presence of a symptom/condition, that simply adding good would help you heal?

Every body is unique.  Every body has strength and weakness.  Every body handles germs, inflammation, pain and stress differently.  Strive to find the perfect combination of provider, treatment, faith and certainty that is right for you!  Never doubt your intuition, even if it challenges the norm!  Regardless of your religion or belief in a higher power, believe in YOU!  Find a proposal that delivers an inner peace and follow through!  Remember Teresa’s discovery, the “body is an amazing miracle that is complex and intertwined!  I have learned that if I treat the whole body….including the mind, spirit and emotion….then healing can begin.”

In Loving Service,

Dr. Taryn

10 Things Most People Don’t Know About Chiropractic Care ~ Dr. O’Maley

1. Pain is the last symptom of dysfunction. A patient’s back is often restricted or unstable for months or years before it presents as a problem and they show up in a chiropractor’s office. In addition, the absence of pain is not health. While medication may be needed, if you take a pill and the pain goes away, the dysfunction that caused it still persists. Muscle, ligament and joint injuries often occur as a result of long-term biomechanical dysfunction, sometimes from past injuries, making the area more susceptible to future injury.

2. Athletes use chiropractors to stay well and perform better, not just for the occasional injury.

Athletes choose chiropractors because we are movement specialists. Chiropractors were spotted all over the Olympic coverage last year, and top athletes such as Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps, Tom Brady, Evander Holyfield, and Arnold Schwarzenegger have all been proud patients of chiropractors. These days it’s far more common than not for major athletes and sports teams to keep chiropractors nearby to help prevent injuries, speed injury recovery, improve balance and coordination, and give them a greater competitive edge.

3. The body does not perform as a cluster of separate mechanisms, but rather a cascade of events that all starts with proper control by the nervous system.

The nerves that travel through and control every function of your body originate at the spinal cord and their transmission may be disrupted if the joints of the surrounding spinal column are not moving properly. This disruption in biomechanical integrity combined with altered physiological function is what chiropractors call a subluxation. Below is a chart that illustrates the relationship of the spinal nerves exiting the vertebra branching off to the various organ systems. You can see why it is not uncommon for a chiropractor to treat a patient with mid-back pain who also suffers from irritable bowel system, a patient with a subluxated sacrum who has been unsuccessfully trying to become pregnant, or a patient with an upper back fixation and acid reflux.

10 Things Most People Dont Know About Chiropractic

4. Doctors don’t do the healing.

Sorry to disappoint you, but a chiropractor will never fix your back. What we are able to do is restore proper motion in the joints, which relieves tension on the nerves and muscles and allows your body to do the healing that it is inherently made to do. As chiropractors, we believe that the body is a perfect organism in its natural state, and all disease comes from a disruption in the body’s proper transmission of signals by the nerves which affects its ability to heal and to defend against disease-causing agents. We never treat disease. We assess to find which spinal levels are causing the disfunction, and we adjust it to restore proper nerve flow so the nervous system may work as efficiently and effectively as possible.

5. Chiropractic is for all ages. Many seniors aren’t aware of the benefits of chiropractic care which can help them not only with pain relief, but also increase range of motion, balance and coordination, and decrease joint degeneration. There’s no patient too young for chiropractic either! Chiropractors check infants moments after birth for misalignments of the upper vertebrae that may occur as a result of the birth process. In addition to supporting overall health and well-being, parents also take their children to chiropractors to encourage healthy brain and nervous system development, to assist with colic, asthma, allergies, bed-wetting and sleeping problems, and to assist with behavioral disorders.

6. We know about more than your backbone! This surprises many people who had no idea that chiropractors give advice on nutrition, fitness, ergonomics and lifestyle, screen for conditions unrelated to the musculoskeletal system and refer out to other practitioners when necessary. Chiropractors are also able to complete specialties in other areas such as pediatrics, sports rehabilitation, neurology, clinical nutrition, and addictions and compulsive disorders.

Other than particular specialties and the differences in learning to adjust and learning to prescribe medication, our training hours are not dissimilar from that of medical doctor. The following are the classroom hours for basic science requirements compiled and averaged following a review of curricula of 18 chiropractic schools and 22 medical schools.

10 Things Most People Dont Know About Chiropractic

7. Successful chiropractic patients accept responsibility. When somebody says that they tried chiropractic and it didn’t help, I cringe and get the feeling that they really missed the boat. Of course, there are cases with complicating factors, but I have heard this from people with straightforward chiropractic problems when it is very clear what has happened here. In most cases, one doesn’t acquire back pain over night, and it’s not going to go away over night. If a weak core from years of sitting at your desk is to blame for the additional stress on your joints, I would expect an adjustment to provide relief, but once the condition is no longer exacerbated, I would most definitely prescribe some exercises for you to do at home. I might also suggest we evaluate your nutrition if I suspect an inflammatory diet may be wiring you for pain. Sure, I’m always happy to adjust someone and make a living, but if you’ve been given homework and you don’t do it, I better not hear you say chiropractic didn’t work when you’re hurting again!

8. Chiropractic may help you get sick less. Studies have indicated that adjustments consistently reduce the production of pro-inflammatory mediators associated with tissue damage and pain, and may also enhance the production of immunoregulatory complexes important for healthy immune system defense. As far back as the deadly flu pandemic of 1917-1918, chiropractors noticed that their patients seemed to have fewer fatalities than among the general population and were able to publish their work in an osteopathic journal since no scholarly journals were accepting chiropractic data. The estimated death rate among patients of conventional medical care in the U.S. was estimated at 5 to 6 percent while the fatality rate among influenza cases receiving spinal adjustments was estimated at 0.25%.

9. “I heard I’ll have to go forever” is a myth. You may want to go to your chiropractor forever once you’ve started because you didn’t realize how great getting adjusted is, but your doctor won’t expect you to come for continuous care without symptoms. Generally, if you come in with pain, once you’ve been treated for your initial complaint, you’ll be scheduled for a few more appointments to make sure proper motion is being maintained, then it will be recommended you return occasionally to be checked just like you would go to the dentist to get checked for tartar buildup and cavities. Of course, many people still choose to see their chiropractor weekly or monthly for wellness or maintenance care.

10. Adjustments don’t hurt. There is no bone snapping or warrior-style pulling heads off spinal columns! The neck adjustment some chiropractors use causes anticipation for many new patients, but is actually much more gentle than they imagined, and involves a quick, direct thrust to a specific spinal bone. The sound an adjustment makes is called a cavitation and is only space being created within the joint causing gasses to be released from the joint capsule, which creates the popping or cracking noise. Also, chiropractic adjustments will not wear out your joints, as some imagine because they have been warned not to “crack their knuckles” for this reason in the past. Adjustments, unlike “knuckle cracking” or having your friend stomp on you while you lay on the carpet, are applied specifically to improve the motion of your joints and limit the small dysfunctions that over time can lead to arthritis. Most people after an adjustment describe the feeling as being “lighter”, having greater ease in moving the body, and being able to stand up taller.

OsteOOOHHHH-Arthritis

Sharing a little about osteoarthritis today!!  Some references use terms such as arthritis, osteoarthritis (OA), degenerative arthritis, degenerative joint disease (DJD) or osteoarthrosis.  Depending on which specialty doctor you consult, there may be some variation in these disorders, but for the simplicity of our purposes we are talking about the same thing – inflammation of a joint.  OA is the most common form of joint inflammation, commonly leading to degeneration of the joint over time in the absence of diagnosis and proper care.

Osteoarthritis is characterized by:

  •  mild, early-morning stiffness
  • stiffness following periods of rest
  • pain that worsens on joint use
  • loss of joint function
  • local tenderness
  • soft tissue and/or bony swelling
  • joint crepitus
  • restricted mobility
  • X-Ray findings of narrowed joint space, cartilage erosion, bone spurs, etc.
I have suggested the article on Osteoarthritis out of the Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine by Michael Murray, ND and Joseph Pizzorno, ND on countless occassions for patients at the office and for casual conversations away from the office. I would like to share a little from the cover about the doctors, then a few excerpts, and conclude with just a few extras about joint inflammation.

Dr. Murray is a naturopath and leading researcher in the field of natural medicine.  He is a faculty member of Seattle’s Bastyr University, one of the world’s foremost institutions of naturopathic learning.  In addition, Dr. Murray maintains a private practice and has authored over 20 books.

Dr. Pizzorno is a prominent naturopath physician, researcher and educator, along with the founding president of Bastyr University.  He is also the author of Total Wellness (Prima).

WHAT IS NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE?
As defined at naturopathic.org: Naturopathic medicine is based on the belief that the human body has an innate healing ability. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) teach their patients to use diet, exercise, lifestyle changes and cutting edge natural therapies to enhance their bodies’ ability to ward off and combat disease. Naturopathic physicians craft comprehensive treatment plans that blend the best of modern medical science and traditional natural medical approaches to not only treat disease, but to also restore health.

SOME INTERESTING EXCERPTS

Weight-baring joints are more often affected – knees, hips and spine.

Osteoarthritis is divided into 2 categories: primary and secondary.  In Primary OA, the degenerative “wear and tear” process occurs after the fifth and sixth decades of life, with no apparent predisposing abnormalities.  Secondary OA is associated with some predisposing factor that is responsible for the degenerative changes (ie inherited abnormalities, trauma, previous inflammatory disease).

Onset can be subtle.  Morning joint stiffness is commonly the first symptom.  As the disease progresses, there is pain on motion of the involved joint that is made worse by prolonged activity and relieved by rest.  There are usually NO SIGNS OF INFLAMMATION.

One of the most interesting clinical features of OA is the lack of coorelation between severity of OA (determined by degenerative changes on XRay) and the degree of pain.

Depression and anxiety appear to increase the experience of the pain of OA.

Some of the side effects of aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) – such as ibuprofen (Motrin, Nuprin, Advil), piroxicam (Feldene), diclofenac (Voltaren), fenoprofen (Nalfon), indomethacin (Indocin), naproxen (Naprosyn), tolmetin (Tolectin), and sulindac (Clinoril) – are well-known: gastrointestinal upset, ulcer formation, headaches, dizziness, etc.  A less well-known side effect is FURTHER DEGENERATION OF THE JOINT CARTILAGE.  Experimental studies have shown that aspirin and other NSAIDs inhibit cartilage synthesis and accelerate cartilage destruction.  Clinical studies have also shown that NSAID use is associated with acceleration of osteoarthritis and increased joint destruction.

There is a considerable amont of evidence that hormonal forces may initiate or accelerate the development of OA……tamoxifen (an ANTI-estrogen drug) relieves it by decreasing erosion of the cartilage…..compounds containing phytoestrogen activity are capable of binding to estrogen receptors and acting as estrogen antagonists…..perhaps the best way to increase the intake of phytoestrogens is to increase the intake of food sources of phytoestrogens (fennel, celery, parsley, nuts, whole grains and apples).

Norman Childers popularized a diet that treated OA by eliminating nightshade vegetables such as tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, peppers and tobacco.

The Framingham Osteoarthritis Cohort Study indicates that a high intake of antioxidant nutrients, especially Vitamin C, may reduce the risk of cartilage loss and inhibit progression of the disease in people who have OA….Both Vitamin E and C appear to enhance the stability of sulfated proteoglycans in the complex structure comprising articular cartilage.

Botanicals such as bromelain, curcumin and ginger have anti-inflammatory effects that can be helpful in the management of OA.

Boswellic acid extracts have demonstrated anti-arthritic effects in a variety of trials.

Glucosamine sulfate (Gs) promotes cartilage synthesis.  Gs was significantly more effective than the placebo in improving pain and movement after only four weeks of use…..the longer glucosamine sulfate is used, the more obvious the therapeutic benefit.  Double blind studies have shown that Gs produces better long-term results than NSAIDs in relieving pain and inflammation of OA…..Gs not only relieves the symptoms, including pain, it also helps the body repair damaged joints (note: obesity reduces the effectiveness of Gs; higher dosages may be required for obese patients)

Dr. William Kaufman, and later Dr. Abram Hoffer, reported very good clinical results in the treatment of hundreds of patients with RA and OA using high-dose niacinamide….research was later conducted that demonstrated niacinamide produced a 29% improvement in pain, range of motion and flexibility as compared to a 10% worsening in the placebo group. (note: high doses of niacinamide can result in significant side effects and should only be used under strict physician supervision)

Nonpharmacological approaches to pain in OA:

  • Acupuncture
  • Exercise
  • Weight loss
  • Laser therapy
  • Massage
  • Ultrasound
  • Psychological aids
  • They forgot chiropractic in this list 😦

If you consult the Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine you will find many more of the details in this article, including a treatment summary with suggested doseages.  It is a really neat book to have in your library anyhow; lots of valueable information with research-backed credibility.

DR. TARYN’S COMMENTS:

So, I must start with how chiropractic care can aid in the management and/or resolution of osteoarthritis!  Drs. Murray and Pizzorno mention adding chiropractic care in their treatment summary.  I would recommend a chiropractic evaluation to anyone…wait, EVERYone who has been diagnosed with osteoarthritis or who has the related symptoms!!

RESEARCH SAYS

The journal, Annals of Internal Medicine, reported that an 63% of patients seeing a rheumatologist for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and fibromyalgia, sought out some type of complementary care and alternative medicine (CAM).  Of these individuals, a full 31% visited a chiropractor at least one time.  More importantly, 73% of the individuals with arthritis that did seek a chiropractor’s help found chiropractic therapy helpful.  In another report, the US Agency for Health Care Policy and Research stated that chiropractic care is helpful in overcoming acute back pain.

IT’S THE NATURAL CHOICE

The whole basis of chiropractic is the adjustment.  The chiropractic adjustment can be applied to any joint in the body.  Chiropractors learn various techniques that prepare them to evaluate and adjust the spine as well as extremities (ankle, knee, wrist, elbow, shoulder, jaw).

As I mentioned earlier, OA primarily affects the weight-baring joints.  Weight-baring joints are influenced by physical, chemical and emotional stress just like any other joint.  There is a noteable difference in the physical stress of these joints though – gravity!  Weight-baring joints are impacted by gravity making posture, gait, footwear, sitting/standing/walking surfaces, objects in back pockets when seated (wallet, phone, etc), number of hours/day in prolonged weight-baring postures, and many other factors are very significant in the development of not only the inflammatory process, but especially the long-term degenerative process.

This is extra important so let me say this again, differently.  Some resources say that 80% of people over the age of 50 have osteoarthritis.  So lets take a male who is 53 years old for example.  Consider the “wear and tear” on his spine, particularly the weight-baring joints, given the following:

  • 30 lbs overweight
  • asymmetric posture – forward head carriage, slumped shoulders and chest
  • shoes that are worn on the soles and the arch support is broken down
  • carries his wallet (approximately 2″ thick) in his back, right pocket
  • 25 minute commute each way to work (sitting on his wallet)
  • high stress (bills, deadlines, illness in the family, etc) + high blood pressure
  • when he walks, his left foot flares out and his right tracks straight ahead
  • occupation requires him to stand, stoop and squat on a concrete surface for 8 hours/day, 5 days/week
  • average American diet with minimal water intake
  • limited quality sleep
  • not currently exercising
  • consumes occassional alcohol and infrequently smokes cigarettes

As you picture this gentleman, try to picture the stress that his spine is under on a daily basis.  Since this picture typically starts in the early part of the 2nd decade for many people, it is no wonder 80% of people over the age of 50 have inflammation eating away at their joints and causing daily pain and discomfort; maybe 30 years of abuse is the statistical limit!  I’m being sarcastic, but you can probably relate to this scenario or know someone who can.  Independently, few of these things are trouble-makers, but when you combine their power on a daily basis – the level of stress accumulates quite quickly!  Chiropractors lovingly work to relieve the stress caused by daily living!

ANOTHER HELPFUL TOOL

Omega Fatty Acids are absolutely essential in the case of osteoarthritis!!  I truely do my best to recommend quality fish oil to all of my patients as a pro-active approach to the daily stresses causing molecular levels of inflammation in all of us!  This is just an exponential need in the OA patients!

The University of Maryland Medical Center’s website shares the following: research shows that omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation and may help lower  risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and arthritis. Omega-3  fatty acids are highly concentrated in the brain and appear to be important for  cognitive (brain memory and performance) and behavioral function. In fact,  infants who do not get enough omega-3 fatty acids from their mothers during  pregnancy are at risk for developing vision and nerve problems. Symptoms of  omega-3 fatty acid deficiency include fatigue, poor memory, dry skin, heart  problems, mood swings or depression, and poor circulation.

KEEP MOVIN’

Exercise and motion in general is going to be important to keeping your joints healthy!  There are so many organizations that are creating programs to incorporate fitness into your life – join one!  You can make new friends and connect with old ones by working out together.  If you choose to START a work-out regiment, you might consider consulting a personal trainer or healthcare professional about some of the types of exercise that might best suit your goals.  I find myself recommending yoga quite often.  There are several different types of yoga so do your homework before joining a class.  Once you find a good fit for your pace and needs, you will find there are a lot of physiological, psychological and biomechanical benefits!  This website has a LOT of reasons why yoga is a great choice for your work-out regimen:

LAST BUT NOT LEAST

Ice, water and rest!  Never underestimate the power of these 3 power-packers!!  Most often my patients report that they have used heat, heat and then some more heat.  Heat is usually within reach and just sounds good for most achy joints (including the spine).  Unfortunately, heat accelerates inflammation.  In the case of chronic inflammation, ice therapy will be much more productive!

Water…need I say more!  Most often patients are just shy of ashamed to admit how little water they consume (Dad, are you reading this!!  LOL!)  I am convinced it is a learned behavior.  Arthur Guyton’s Textbook of Medical Physiology states that “the total amount of water in a man of average weight (70 kilograms) is approximately 40 litres, averaging 57 percent of his total body weight; In a newborn infant, this may be as high as 79 percent of the body weight, but it progressively decreases from birth to old age, most of the decrease occurring during the first 10 years of life. Also, obesity decreases the percentage of water in the body, sometimes to as low as 45 percent. Considering your body is 57% water, maybe try consuming 57% of your daily intake in water!!  WOW!  I can see the look I would get with that one 🙂  Sincerely, you should slowly increase your daily water consumption to meet 1/2 of your body weight in ounces per day.  For each additional serving of non-water you drink, add the equivalent in ounces to your base intake of water.

Finally, rest.  Don’t we all need more of this!  We learned in chiropractic college that your body can never recover lost rest.  Personally, I really enjoy “catching up” on my sleep, but I suppose it is in my head 🙂

Inflammation, just like in the famous case of tendonitis, requires rest!  As best you can, try to get 8 – 10 hours of sleep per night and take naps when your body prompts you.  You heal more efficiently when you are sleeping and it gets rid of the bags under your eyes!!  Just making sure you are invested in this….everyone likes to look at less baggage 🙂

As you can tell, I have had fun sharing this information with you.  I hope that in the light of all the depressing-ness of this topic, you have found hope in the various treatments that all show successful!  Osteoarthritis is a complicated diagnosis due to the complexity of the body’s awesome design and ability to self-heal!  Have faith in your body’s innate power, give it the tools that you decide (hopefully with the help of a healthcare professional – wholistic or otherwise) will help it to heal, and then let it HEAL!!  Be prepared to thrive and celebrate the feeling of motion and life!!

Be blessed in every way!  In loving service,

Dr. Taryn Lowery

What is Health?

We often ask this question to our patients, and most commonly the response is, “Not hurting anywhere” or “No symptoms”.  A point needs to be made concerning this question.  A life lead by the absence/presence of symptoms is a life destined to caught off guard.  Think about this, did someone who went to their Doctor and was told they had cancer all of the sudden develop the cancer that morning or the previous day?  Of course not, it took time for their body to lose its ability to fight off the cancerous environment before giving way to the infection.  We don’t just all of the sudden develop a cold, or flu, or even cancer.   Chances are we have had it for a long enough time that our body was overwhelmed due to it not being able to cope with the stressor.

If you look the definition of HEALTH, you will see it stated as, “A state of physical, mental, and social well-being.”  Let’s take that definition even further.  HEALTH can be looked at as all systems within the body are working at such a high level of function that it will be able to cope with or defend against any foreign invader or stressor it comes up against.  Sadly, typical human nature displays we only care about our HEALTH when symptoms show up.  One can say this is not HEALTHcare, but rather SICKcare.

Think about the various negative influences  on our HEALTH we are dealing with in our country today.  Our sleep quality is terrible for a multitude of causes, our food choices are poor at best, our consistency with exercise is subpar, our workload is overwhelming us, and our medication intake is higher than any other country in the world.  We make up ~5% of the population, and yet use ~56% of the pharmaceutical drugs on the market!  This is insanity because we are doing the same thing over and over and yet expecting a different result.

A scenario we often see from patients includes: poor sleep, digestion, concentration, possible depression, and a rigid/inflexible body that is screaming for some type of relief from the stressors it deals with on a daily basis.  The sad thing is all they may have come int0 our office for was their neck or lower back was bothering them.  Our bodies in this case can be compared to an onion due to the many “layers”.  The common action many patients resort to before seeing a Chiropractor is medications for their insomnia, antacids for their GERD, their, laxatives for their constipation, and anti-depressants for their depressed state.  HEALTH does not come from a bottle, shot, or any other unnatural outside source.  HEALTH comes from within.  In fact, HEALTH originates from above (your Nervous System) to travel down (your other systems), and from the inside to the outside.  You never have to tell a cut how to heal, or your heart how to beat, or your GI tract how to utilize the food you’ve consumed.   This does not happen by chance, but by a coordinated chain of events which is all regulated by your Nervous System.  It’s the first system to develop while you’re mommy’s womb. It’s the master computer within you that not only allows you to operate, but helps you cope with any and all stressors out there.  This is known as your body’s Innate Intelligence.  An organization of reactions happening at the exact moment they’re supposed to not because of coincidence, but because of necessity to maintain your life!  However, the Nervous System can only take so much stress.  Being that it regulates all other systems, it is the last to become “sick”.  This is observed in a variety of stress related complications.

The human race is more sick, more diseased, and further away from HEALTH than it ever has been.  Our bodies are slowly losing the ability to cope with all the physical, emotional, and chemical stresses that bombard us day in and day out.  Statistics show as high as 70% of office visits to the family physician were due to poor lifestyle choices.  Would this have been such a high number if we took responsibility for our own HEALTH?  Would this be such a high number if we made HEALTH our number one priority?  I’m an optimist, so I’d like to think not.  I’d like to think any person reading this that is tired of feeling their HEALTH is headed in the wrong direction will set their personal HEALTH improvements at the top of their 2011 New Year’s resolution list.

It is time to make choices that improve your HEALTH.  It is time to look at your HEALTH as in invaluable asset that you will not and cannot compromise.  It is time to set you and your family up to be the HEALTHiest you’ve ever been this upcoming year of 2011.  HEALTH has been regarded as a journey, not a distination.  You can begin your personal journey by first recognizing you will have only one spine in your life, which is housed by the only Nervous System you’ll ever have.  If you take care of this one spine, not only will your functional quality of life greatly improve, but your overall HEALTH will improve as well.  In fact, patients under regular Chiropractic care not only felt they had functional improvement over the ailments they first received treatment for, but also stated they had an overall better outlook on life.

Chiropractic care is a whole body, natural approach to achieving optimal HEALTH by searching for and removing the restrictions (joints that lack proper motion) in your spine so the connection between your Nervous System and body can be re-established.  Give your spine and HEALTH a chance.  Don’t wait for a symptom to show itself.  Have your spine checked today so you can the healthiest 2011 possible.

“If you would seek health, look first to the spine.”  Hippocrates.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you gained a motivation like you’ve never had to make your personal HEALTH the highest of responsibilities.

Yours in Health,

Joey Lowery, DC, MS, CSCS, NSCA-CPT

Thoughts, Traumas & Toxins – The SUBLUXATION Conundrum

I ran across an interesting website via a post on facebook.  http://www.drbenkim.com/ I have since subscribed to Dr. Ben Kim’s “Experience Your Best Health” Newsletter and I’m excited about what information I may run across in the future.  Anyhow, he posted an interesting article on the impact emotional stress has on our lives.  I found it all the more interesting because, in chiropractic, the basis of philosophy revolves around the concept that thoughts, traumas and toxins are the cause of subluxation (an interference in the natural flow of your God-given communication highway…otherwise known as your nervous system).  There is a lot to be said about this philosophy.  Enjoy an excerpt from Dr. Ben Kim’s Natural Health website:

“What is the most powerful step you can take to dramatically improve your health? My answer is this: Learn how to effectively manage emotional stress!

All of my clinical and personal experiences over the years have me convinced that no other factor has more influence over your health. Not diet, not exercise, not even how much you sleep.”  http://drbenkim.com/reduce-stress.html

In Dr. Ben Kim’s article on emotional stress and the effects it has on the sympathetic nervous system, he offers ways to MANAGE stress!  I think this is a great article with some very simple, generic practices that we can all impliment.  I always emphasize the effects of “Thoughts, Traumas and Toxins” to our patients.  The 3-Ts cause subluxation…which is where the adjustment comes in!  The elimination or at least minimization of the 3-Ts is where consistent chiropractic CARE comes in.

I usually describe my OPINION of the particularly strong influence of Thoughts as a pie graph.  About 6% of subluxation comes from traumas, another 6% from toxins and 88% of the subluxation complex is influenced by THOUGHTS!  Again, this is my opinion that I have developed from my personal experience and case studies with my patients.  Of course the percentages are argueable, but that is not the point.  The point is, emotional stress plays a huge roll in our lives!  We have to learn to manage it by doing things such as suggested by Dr. Ben Kim.  The only thing that I would add is each person processes stress differently and therefore must manage it differently.  Finding a “happy place” on a regular basis in your OWN way is a therapy comparable to no other!  Make a list of things that put a smile on your face.  Try to make that list as long as possible!  If you need help, look through a photo album from a family trip, wedding, reunion, vacation, graduation or birth.  Look at this list often.  Impliment these things in your life often!  If time only allows you to visualize them, visualize away!  PLAN!  Plan time in every day for YOU!  Many financial advisors say, “pay yourself first.”  I say, PUT yourself first.  There are many people in our lives that are important, but without your personal peace there is no possible way to give to those that you love.  You may be surprised how putting yourself first will positively affect your relationship with others and more importantly, your outlook on your health and life!

I challenge you to learn more about the effects of emotional stress, not to dwell on the effects, but to create a compulsion within you to GET RID OF IT!!  I believe we are designed to thrive!  Thrive physically and mentally!  There is a lot of potential within you – find it!  Push the limits of your potential by giving energy and time to YOU!  By all means, get adjusted!!  Eat whole foods, exercise daily, get regular massage therapy…just be GOOD to yourself!  Harmony and peace will follow!
